SILOAM – Six turnovers was too much for Horizon Christian Academy football to overcome in a 40-6 loss at Nathanael Greene Academy on Friday in the Warriors’ season-opener.
Horizon (0-1) fumbled six times inside the Nathanael Greene 20-yard line. The Patriots scored off of five of the turnovers.
“We’re just building and taking baby steps,” Warriors head coach Charles Wiggins said. “Until we mature in our mindset and stop making mental mistakes, we’re going to struggle.”
Michael Walker caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from John Michael Booth to pull Horizon within 14-6 in the second quarter. But Nathanael Greene returned the second half kickoff for a touchdown and never looked back.
North Forsyth 21, Hart County 18
HARTWELL – Jacob Whitten kicked a field goal with four seconds left to lift the Raiders to a win Friday in their final scrimmage of the preseason.
The Raiders’ varsity left the game trailing 18-10 after three quarters against a Hart County team that went 9-2 last season. The only previous meeting between the teams was in the second round of the Class AA playoffs in 1999.
Both teams inserted junior varsity players in the fourth quarter. The Raiders promptly tied the game with a touchdown and two-point conversion.
“It was a good night,” North head coach Jason Galt said. “We still made some mistakes. Had a good drive in the third quarter that was more indicative of us. It kind of got the momentum back for us.
“[Hart County is] a traditional powerhouse in Georgia and we battled them for three quarters.”
North opens its season next Friday at Cherokee.
