South Forsyth’s girls and Lambert’s boys took top honors at the truncated Forsyth County Track and Field Championships, held in a cool, windy mist at West Forsyth High School Wednesday evening.

Due to the inclement weather that has wreaked havoc on sporting events across the county, meet director Clayton Tillery was forced to shorten the championships to a one-day only event, eliminating prelims. Seeding for competitors was based on submitted times from coaches.

Cold rain and gusts of wind that blew into the spectators couldn’t dampen the quality of the event.

“We kind of made a decision that we wanted the best for the kids and we felt like that was one day. It worked out, we got some misty rain, but our parents and volunteers did a great job,” Tillery said.

“I’ve been in this county for 12 years and this was one of the better meets I’ve seen,” he added. “Kudos to all of the coaches. Forsyth County has grown quickly and showed it today.”

South’s girls combined for a winning score of 131.33—an 11-point edge over West. Kaylee DuPont finished first in the 800-meter and 1,600-meter dash, while Cassidy Dowd placed first in the 400-meter dash.

South’s most dominating performance came from long-distance runner Savannah Carnahan, who finished the 3,200-meter run in 11 minutes and eight seconds, which was 50 seconds faster than teammate Emma Maisel.

South coach Jerry Edmonson was happy to get the win after falling just short the previous few seasons.

“Hats off to our distance program,” Edmonson said. “Being runner up in the state for AAAAAA cross country helped us out. We did a good job in our field events, we’re young, but we’re very excited. The third time is a charm.”

Lambert’s boys finished with 129 points, followed by North Forsyth at 103.5. The Longhorns got victories in the 800-meter and 1,600-meter dash from Jonathan Schwind, finishing at 2:01.69 and 4:27,15, respectively. Jalen Kidd finished first in the long jump for Lambert, while Camron Carter took the 100-meter dash with a 10.91 finish.

Lambert’s girls won the 400 and 1,600 relays. Molly Garrett, Dominiq Delisser, Lucy Calhoun and Nia Hinson won in the 400 relay for the Lady Longhorns, while Julia Parks, Delisser, Amanda Clarke and Ryann Dickerson won in the 1,600 relay.

Brian Wright, Justin Starks, Austin Atarks and Carter took the 400 relay for the Longhorns, while South won the boy’s 1,600 relay with Jay Li, Vance Johnson, Corey Milton and Jackson Davis.
