WEEKEND RECAP: Lambert boys, girls cross country sweep Covered Bridge Run

SOFTBALL

Etowah 9, Lambert 1

The Lady Longhorns fell in a non-region game Saturday, allowing five runs in the first inning. Lambert started five true freshmen in the contest. Head coach Brooks Youngblood’s crew (11-2, 7-0 Region 5-7A) will get back to action tonight at Milton.

West Forsyth 3, Brookwood 2

West defeated the Lady Broncos in the opening game of a double-header Saturday. Morgan Koepke was 1-for-2 with an RBI, while Arynn Pickvet had a double and two RBI.

West Forsyth 4, Etowah 3

The Lady Wolverines turned around to take down Etowah to finish 2-0 at the double-header clash. Starting pitcher Hannah Guthrie earned the win on the mound, while Alana Frye stood out at the plate going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Kelsey Schell had the game-winning RBI in the seventh inning. West (9-8, 4-3 Region 5-7A) will return to action tonight at home against North Forsyth (9-4, 4-3).

CROSS COUNTRY

Lambert’s boys and girls finished in first place at the Mizuno Covered Bridge Run in Roswell on Saturday, hosted by Roswell High School. The boys edged Alpharetta by 39 points to run away with the title, thanks to top-3 finishes by Byron Grogan (2nd, 16:27.69) and Lee Keil (3rd, 16:29.54). Brandon Burt finished fifth at 16:39.59. On the girls side Lambert was led by Brianna O’Neal, who finished fifth with a time of 20:05.53. Katie Schwind and Elly Sherman rounded out the top 20.

Forsyth Central’s Calan Gizelbach finished seventh in the field (16:43.41), while Central had two top-20 finishers on the girls side with Laney Kronz finishing 15th and Anna Neville coming in 18th.

South Forsyth and West Forsyth finished neck-in-neck in both the boys and girls side of the Double Dip Invitational at Milton High School. The highlight was in the girls race, where South’s Kaylee DuPont edged West’s Liz Galarza by just six hundredths of a second (18:45.78 to 18:45.84) to finish in second and third, respectively. West’s Haley Tillery and Stephanie Shea had top-30 finishes as West’s girls finished fourth overall, with South coming in at fifth.

In the boys race South and West tied in total points with 185, coming in fifth and sixth. South’s Sean Catania finished 22nd, while West’s Nick Lyon finished 26th.

VOLLEYBALL

Lambert fell to Vestavia Hills (0-2) and Columbus (0-2) over the weekend at the Lovett Block Party on Saturday. The Lady Longhorns got six kills from Kailin Taggart and five from Madeline Bertz and Sarah Thierer in the first loss, then had five kills from freshman Ally Hall in the loss to Columbus. The Lady Longhorns (16-17) play at North Forsyth tonight.

North Forsyth split four matches Saturday at North Cobb, defeating Kennesaw Mountain (2-1) and McEachern (2-0) before falling 0-2 to Hillgrove and North Cobb. The Lady Raiders (21-9) host Lambert tonight.

South Forsyth went 2-4 Saturday during an all-day event at the Tournament of Champions in Spartanburg, S.C. The Lady War Eagles defeated both Gaffney (2-1) and Hillcrest (2-1), but lost to Ashley Hall, Wando, Porter-Gaud and Hillcrest in a second match. South (15-12) hosts Milton tonight.
