South Forsyth’s performance in the state playoffs, which included being the only team to lead state champ Colquitt County in the fourth quarter during the postseason, was enough to catapult into the Georgia Sports Writers Association’s top-10 in the high school football poll final rankings, released Wednesday.
South, ranked No. 8 with 31 total voting points, is just the second team to finish in the top 10 since West Forsyth also finished at No. 8 in 2011 after going 11-2 and reaching the state quarterfinals under head coach Frank Hepler. South had the same record and life in the state playoffs, defeating Lambert 31-7 at home to claim the Region 6-AAAAAA title before knocking out Norcross and Tucker in consecutive weeks.
State champion Colquitt County finished in first place with 100 points, while No. 10 Collins Hill had 13 votes. Roswell, Grayson, Mill Creek, Archer, McEachern and Westlake ranked No. 2-7, respectively, while Camden County came in at No. 9.
Pinecrest Academy, which finished 10-2, defeating Mount Paran Christian in the Region 6-A title game before advancing to the second round of the playoffs, received eight votes and was the first team out in the Class A rankings, five votes behind No. 10 Christian Heritage.
