What to know: West can gain even more respect this week following wins over Hillgrove and Dacula in the past two. A win would give West a 4-1 start for the first time since it went 10-2 in 2012 under head coach Frank Hepler.
West is getting all-state type of production right now from running back and linebacker Grant Torgerson, so much so that it’s hard to tell whether he’s more impactful on offense or defense. Quarterback Kiernen Hamilton is also spreading the ball around the field to a slew of receivers, much like last season, and the defense has some emerging stars including Jackson Brantley and defensive back Cade Vela.
Newnan can be a sneaky opponent. The Cougars went 9-3 last year and advanced to the second round of the postseason before falling to Mill Creek, but this season they’ve hit bumps in the road against elite competition like Carrollton (a 16-6 loss) and Etowah (a 28-20 loss). The Cougars are coming off a 48-14 win over Washington, which was their highest scoring output since Oct. 2 of last season.
