West Forsyth High School will induct its first Athletic Hall of Fame class this fall as part of the school’s 10th anniversary.
Former coaches, players and athletic support staff who worked at West a minimum of five years and 10 years total in education are eligible to be nominated by the public for induction. Former players must be five years removed from graduation.
The deadline for nominations is May 8, after which a committee of current West head coaches and administrators will review all applications and select up to three inductees, according to Wolverines athletic director Brett Phipps.
Those chosen will be announced at the West athletic department’s “Night of Champions” award ceremony on May 15 then formally inducted at a banquet prior to the Wolverines’ football game Sept. 23 and recognized at halftime.
Phipps conceived of the idea as a way to document and recognize those who have made significant contributions to the Wolverines’ athletic history in conjunction with the school’s milestone.
“Now that we’ve got a little bit of history behind us, we felt it was a good time,” Phipps said.
Phipps said the nomination process will be a new ritual going forward: every year around spring break, the school will send out the word for applications and consider the nominees.
