West girls cross country impress at state

With an impressive display of team depth, West Forsyth girls cross country exceeded all expectations to finish fifth with 200 points at the Class AAAAAA championship meet Saturday in Carrollton.

All five of the Lady Wolverines’ runners who scored placed in the top 100, including three in the top 30. Senior Haley Anderson led West with a 10th place finish in 19 minutes 42.59 seconds. Freshman Liz Galarza finished 24th in 20:17.61, while freshman Julie Ericson was 30th in 20:24.83.

West’s other top runners were Kim Gibson who was 51st in 20:59.35 and Kaitlyn Griffith who finished 90th in 21:41.08.

Peachtree Ridge won the team title with 119 points.

South Forsyth cracked the top 10 in the team standings thanks to the strong 1-2 punch of Savannah Carnahan and Milicent Bergey. Carnahan was the top girl finisher from Forsyth County, finishing sixth in 19:37.70. Bergey came in 11th in 19:42.92.

Taylor Coleman (61st, 21:13.82), Emma Maisel (67th, 21:19.08) and Caitlan Hulsebus (72nd, 21:22.69) also had strong performances for the Lady War Eagles.

Lambert finished 12th as a team, led by freshman Mae McKenna who came in 33rd in 20:31.03. Other top runners for the Lady Longhorns were Katherine Aikins (55th, 21:04.34), Madeline Gilleland (56th, 21:07.55), Megan Gianini (21:21.76) and Abby Fox (78th, 21:29.57).

West boys top South: South may have won region, but West got the better of the War Eagles at the state meet.

The Wolverines finished 12th in the team standings with 349 points, just ahead of South who finished 13th with 360 points. Lambert was 19th with 498.

West was led by sophomore John Green, who came in 41st in 17:31.83. Brett Gammon was 68th in 17:48.50, Austin Shea was 74th in 17:51.50, Brian Skoglind came in 85th in 18:00.30 while Josh Harrison finished 95th in 18:13.64.

Brookwood won the team title with 105 points.

Jake Howlin led South with a 45th place finish in 17:32.83. Region champion Ryan Peppenhorst was 64th in 17:45.23, Matthew Patterson came in 71st in 17:50.68, Trevor Kane was 85th in 18:02.17 and Reed Vaughn finished 107th in 18:23.68.

Lambert’s Jonathan Schwind was the top boy finisher from Forsyth, finishing 39th in 17:29.81. The Longhorns also got strong runs from Michael House (18:21.87), Christopher Scharp (115th, 18:27.55), Noah Schaich (138th, 18:51.77) and Hank Grogan (19:19.75).

Central boys complete journey: Making their first state championship meet appearance in school history, the Bulldogs finished 17th in the Class AAAAA standings with 470 points.

Sophomore Max Warner was the top runner for Central finishing 27th in 17:32.87. Will Scott came in 95th in 18:22.68, Cole Gizelbach was 110th in 18:33.89, Charlie Webb was 132nd in 18:48.95 while Reese Mitchell finished 134th in 18:50.96.

Flowery Branch won the team title with 84 points.

Zalzman ends career with 10th: Pinecrest Academy senior runner Jessica Zalzman finished off her career Saturday at the Class A girls championship meet.

Zalzman, the lone runner for the Lady Paladins, came in 10th in 20:30.79.

Pace Academy won the team title.
