10-year-old child, father still critical after being recovered from water at Lanier Islands
Lake Lanier

Two people, including a 10-year-old child, who were taken to the hospital Thursday after they were recovered from the water at Lake Lanier Islands are still hospitalized in critical condition, according to authorities.

DNR officials said both patients were still in the hospital and in critical condition as of Monday, July 15.

Hall County Fire Services responded around 3 p.m. to Margaritaville at Lanier Islands.

“Arriving units found an approximately 10-year-old juvenile and parent who were recovered from the water. Both patients are being transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville in serious condition,” Capt. Zachary Brackett wrote in an email.

Brackett wrote that, “The father noticed that the son had not surfaced and went into the lake to find him. He then went under water. Life guards and/or bystanders located the juvenile and started rendering aid. The father was then located and removed from the water and (given) aid.”

Brackett said the man is 30 years old and is the child’s father, but the captain did not provide any further details.

The boy was later flown to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is handling the investigation.
