While it’s not quite Halloween yet, kids and families alike can still dress up in any favorite superhero costume this Saturday at the Cumming Library’s celebration of Batman Day.
Sept. 17 marks the third annual Batman Day, and children in kindergarten through fifth grade are invited to dress up as their favorite comic book character or superhero and visit the Cumming Library , located at 585 Dahlonega St., for Batman Day activities, beginning at 1 p.m.
The celebration began in 2014 to honor Batman’s 75th anniversary.
“Fans loved the event so much that DC Entertainment, the world’s largest English-language comic book publisher, continued with annual Batman Day celebrations,” according to a Forsyth County Public Library news release.
Comic book retailers, bookstores and libraries across the country will be hosing events, and this year, the Cumming Library will join forces in an effort to share its collection of superhero books and graphic novels with young readers.
“Comic books and graphic novels about superheroes are incredibly popular with children, even those who are reluctant readers,” said Julie Boyd, youth services supervisor for the branch, one of four in Forsyth. “Our purpose is to help children find reading materials that they enjoy and want to read, so they won’t consider reading as boring or just something they have to do for school.
“We want young readers to be excited about reading for pleasure, and Batman stories are pretty exciting.”
Events on Saturday will include trivia contests and games, such as “Bowling for Villains,” as well as arts and crafts projects.
Participants can create superhero stick puppets and wearable Batman superhero handcuffs as part of the crafts activities.
They will also be given a chance to get their hands on Gotham City, Batman’s fictional hometown.
“Of all the activities we’ve planned, we’re really looking forward to building a model of Gotham City with the kids. When it’s done, we’ll have to do our best to save it from destruction by Batman’s bitter enemies,” Boyd said.
The event is free and no registration is required.
