CUMMING — Authorities responded to reports of a home invasion and shots fired late Tuesday night in Cumming but were unable to track a suspect after exhausting all leads, police said.

Cumming officers responded to the Adair Park subdivision at the city’s northern end and found the homeowner had fired his gun at the apparent burglar. The man told officers he woke to a loud noise.

When he went to investigate, he was hit in the side of the face, he said, knocking out his tooth and sending him to the floor. He said he then saw an unidentified person with a “large build” come toward him, so he fired three times.

According to the police report, the man was “100 percent sure he struck the unidentified person.”

There were no blood marks in or around the house, and a Forsyth County Sheriff’s tracking dog could not find a trail, said Bryan Zimbardi, spokesman for the Cumming police.

No one has come to the local hospital with an unexplained gunshot wound this week.

Investigators found two spent shell casings in the room and two bullet holes in the door, the report said.

No fingerprints were found, and nothing seemed to have been taken, according to Zimbardi. He said it is “not uncommon” for people in a threatening situation to think a different number of shots were fired.

The most recent Cumming home invasion occurred in the same neighborhood in October 2012. It resulted in the arrest and sentencing of three Cumming residents.

Zimbardi said there is no indication this week’s incident is related.
