DAWSON COUNTY - A Kennesaw man was arrested Monday for allegedly stealing a van belonging to Bearden Funeral Home in Dawsonville.

Joshua Brandon Reece, 26, was arrested Oct. 9 in connection with the theft and charged with one count of theft by taking, one count of entering auto and one count of possession of a controlled substance, all felony charges.

The owner of the funeral home, Ted Bearden, reported Oct. 4 that a white 2005 Chevrolet Express that the business uses to transport flowers was stolen from the funeral home property sometime between 2 and 3 p.m. as staff was inside the building preparing for a service.

According to the police report, the van had unlocked doors and keys in the ignition when it was taken from the parking lot.

Sheriff Jeff Johnson said that the van was spotted late Oct. 8 by a Dawson County resident. The resident saw the van pass by where it had been stolen, and contacted sheriff’s office investigators.

“Not only was the van recovered and returned but the suspect was taken into custody and will be charged with ‘theft of motor vehicle,’” Johnson said. “We here at the sheriff's office want to thank the citizens who helped find the stolen van and the wanted suspect.”

Reece was found to be in possession of methamphetamine when officers arrested and searched him.

Reece is currently being held at the Dawson County Detention Center. As of press time bond had not yet been set.

Bearden said Tuesday he is having the van professionally cleaned to assess if there has been any damage.

“I appreciate the sheriff’s department being diligent in the handling of this case and the quick action on their part, as well as the concern of the citizens of this county to locate the van and get it back to us,” Bearden said.
