Two of the three men who reportedly shoplifted about $5,000 worth of merchandise from Walmart in Cumming on Dec. 3 escaped on foot after abandoning their vehicle.

CUMMING — Three men suspected of shoplifting nearly $5,000 worth of merchandise from the Cumming Walmart in December have been indicted in Forsyth County.

According to a Forsyth County Grand Jury indictment, Derrick Jarod Davis, Frankie Montez Hampton and Samuel Demetrius Wright Jr. each face one count of theft.

None of the men lives in the county, according to Forsyth Sheriff’s officials.

Wright Jr., at the time, was thought to be the driver of the vehicle the other two reportedly loaded with electronics, clothes and other items — some valued at hundreds of dollars each — about midnight on Dec. 3.

According to an incident report, the men drove off from the Market Place Boulevard retailer before abandoning the vehicle in east Forsyth. Wright Jr. was arrested after he fell while attempting to run away from the car.

The flight of the other two suspects triggered an extensive manhunt that involved multiple law enforcement agencies, tracking dogs and a helicopter that scanned the area around Windermere Parkway and Old Atlanta and Trammel roads.

It could not immediately be determined whether Davis and Hampton were ever found and arrested before being indicted.

A Cumming police report of the incident noted that a GPS was found among the stolen merchandise the suspects left behind in the vehicle.

Five addresses listed on the device were to other Walmart stores, some more than 150 miles away.
