ATLANTA (AP) — A Cumming resident was among the 10 Georgia veterans added by the Consulate General of France in Atlanta to the country's National Order of the Legion of Honor.

Consul General Denis Barbet was on hand for a ceremony Thursday at the Georgia state Capitol that honored the men for their service during World War II.

Officials say the designation is meant to express gratitude toward troops who liberated Normandy, Provence, Ardennes and northern France in 1944 and 1945.

The National Order of the Legion of Honor was established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, and is the highest service honor in France. Recipients of the honor are selected by French President François Hollande.

According to the consulate, the honorees included Julian D. Fleming, who was a captain in the 721st Bombardment Squadron, 450th Bombardment Group, 15th Air Force.
