FORSYTH COUNTY — Lanier Technical College continues to collect awards, but a recent recognition places the school in a top tier nationwide.

The school was named one of the fastest-growing public, two-year community colleges in the nation.

According to Community College Week’s rankings from the 2012-13 academic year, it sits at the 20th spot of 50 top colleges based on enrollment.

Four Top 50 lists broken down by school size were compiled from analysis of U.S. Department of Education data, with Lanier Tech in the 2,500-4,999 student population category, or the second smallest of four groups.

According to the report, Lanier Tech’s student enrollment increased by 5.6 percent, welcoming 3,389 in 2012 and 3,579 in 2013.

Lanier Tech — of which Forsyth’s campus is one of five locations — was the state’s highest ranking community college in its category.

Atlanta Metropolitan State College (21), Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (22) and Georgia Piedmont Technical College (34) posted smaller enrollment gains.

Last month, the state board of the Technical College System of Georgia selected Lanier Tech as its Technical College of the Year.
