DAWSONVILLE — A Gilmer County teenager was killed in a fiery crash Tuesday afternoon when the sport utility vehicle he was driving left Hwy 52 in northwestern Dawson County, struck a tree and burst into flames.

Georgia State Patrol spokeswoman Robin Stone said Caleb Christopher Millwood, 19, of Ellijay died at the scene, though witnesses and emergency personnel attempted to revive him.

Witnesses were able to free him from the flaming wreckage after cutting his seat belt. A doctor on scene performed CPR, according to Stone.

She said Millwood was traveling on Hwy. 52 near Antioch Church Road when he veered off the road, overcorrected and lost control. The SUV then struck two trees before coming to a rest and catching fire.

The teen was trapped and unresponsive when witnesses got to him, authorities said. He was in critical condition for nearly an hour as first responders attempted to stabilize him.

The death marks the first fatality of 2015 on Dawson County roads, Stone said.
