Monday is the deadline to apply for a homestead exemption to receive the benefit for the current tax year in Forsyth County.
The exemption is a way to reduce the amount of property taxes owed on a home.
Only one owner can apply for a homestead exemption and only on one home — the primary residence.
Those who have a homestead exemption do not need to apply again, the deadline is for new homeowners.
The regular homestead exemption lowers the gross assessment that is applied to certain portions of the mileage rate by $8,000.
It grants an $8,000 reduction to a homeowner’s assessed value against the county’s maintenance and operations and the fire portions of the mileage rate.
This is a special local exemption. The school and state portions of the mileage rate are reduced by $2,000.
To file a homestead exemption, visit the Forsyth County Tax Assessor’s Office at 110 E. Main St., Suite 260, in Cumming.
Office hours are 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call (770) 781-2106 or visit www.forsythco.com.
