Old Cumming rec building to get new life
city

CUMMING — The city of Cumming has reached a deal for a former recreation building, though officials aren’t expecting a lot of money in return.

During its meeting Tuesday, the Cumming city Council voted 5-0 to lease the facility on Pilgrim Mill Road for $1 a year to Creative Enterprises, which plans to use it as a center for adults with special needs.

The lease is similar to an agreement that Creative Enterprises has had with Lawrenceville for about 30 years.

Lisa Bennett, former assistant director of special education for Forsyth County Schools, asked council earlier this winter that the building be used for adults with special needs.

“Forsyth County has a wonderful special education program in its school system, but we have nothing for adults once they leave [it],” she said at the time.

“These adults cannot really work in the community and we need some kind of place that they can come to learn skills, to work jobs, to take classes, to be with their friends up until the age of whatever.”

Mayor Ford Gravitt said Tuesday that some of those works will be for sale to the public.

“They’re going to have a workshop in this thing to do work that these people can do,” he said. “Later on, they’ll have a gift shop where people can by these gifts and it goes back into the program.”

The building in question housed the city’s recreation department until a new facility opened last month across the road at City Park.

The new 27,000-square-foot structure was built for about $2.65 million. It houses various art, dance, drama and fitness classes, as well as department offices. Plans call for it to eventually play host to summer and day camps.
