The circumstances surrounding the death of a Cumming man who officials say was dropped off at a hospital in Walton County early Saturday morning “appear similar” to those of two recent fatal drug overdoses in Forsyth County, officials said Wednesday.

The City of Monroe Police Department recently released more information regarding the death of 28-year-old Jeffrey Kim Wilson, who died at the Clearview Regional Medical Center in Monroe after a friend reportedly brought him to the hospital unconscious.

“On Friday, April 21, [the friend] stated he discovered Wilson in his bathroom with drug paraphernalia and that Wilson appeared to be having a seizure,” Monroe Police Chief Keith Glass told the Forsyth County News Wednesday. “At approximately 1:30 a.m., [he] drove Wilson to Clearview Medical Center alerting medical staff, calling them out to his vehicle where Wilson was removed from the vehicle and taken into the emergency room.

“[He] then left the hospital without giving the medical staff any personal information or information regarding Wilson’s condition. Wilson was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Clearview.”

Monroe police had initially asked for help in identifying Wilson’s friend, but later said they found him.

According to Glass, Wilson was released from the Coffee Correctional Facility in Coffee County on Monday, April 17, just days before his death.

Several inquiries by the Forsyth County News into Wilson’s sentence were not answered as of press time Thursday. The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Wilson had previously been found guilty of several drug charges and violating parole in Forsyth.

Court records also show a Forsyth County Superior Court judge had previously referred Wilson to the Coastal State Prison for substance abuse treatment.

Glass said an autopsy conducted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Medical Examiner’s Office Tuesday ruled “there was no blunt force trauma, knife, or gunshot wounds observed during the examination,” but the toxicology report, which is expected to give an exact cause of death, is still pending.

“At this time, we cannot rule out that Wilson’s death may in some way be related to the recent drug overdose cases in Forsyth County; the circumstances appear similar,” Glass said. “We are working and coordinating with several other agencies as this death investigation remains active and ongoing.”

Wilson’s death marked one of five overdoses, three of which were fatal, between Saturday and Monday in Forsyth County. The other incidents occurred within Forsyth and have been possibly linked to a bad batch of heroin mixed with fentanyl, a synthetic opioid analgesic compared to morphine but up to 100 times more potent.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office had no additional information as of Thursday.
