Republicans are still placing bets on which candidate would be best for the presidential nomination, but the local party is gambling on a fun night Friday.
The second annual Texas Hold’em Tournament is the Forsyth County Republican Party’s only fundraiser this year, said chairman Ethan Underwood.
But based on last year’s success, as well this year’s prizes, the event should help the local GOP build a war chest for a 2012 candidate.
The tournament is set for 7 to 10 p.m. at a private residence in northwestern Forsyth.
The first-place winner will claim a $1,500 seat to the World Series of Poker.
Second place will get an Apple iPad and whoever finishes third will receive a Savannah Lakes vacation.
"We’re hopeful the prizes will attract lots of folks who may not even be active in the Republican Party," he said. "We’ve got a lot of folks around here who are Republican voters, but they’re not necessarily active with the party.
"We’re hopeful this will attract them to play and help raise money, but also get them to meet folks in the Republican Party and say ‘this looks like something I’d be interested in getting involved with.’"
