A 49-year-old construction worker died Wednesday afternoon when he was crushed by a backhoe at a site on the Forsyth-Fulton county line, authorities said.

The incident occurred about noon on McGinnis Ferry Road, between Windward Concourse and Ga. 400 in northern Fulton County.

Alpharetta Public Safety Department spokesman George Gordon said Manuel Aguire appeared to have died from massive traumatic injuries.

“The operator of a backhoe backed over [Aguire],” Gordon said. “We conducted an investigation and everything to date looks like it was a tragic accident.”

Aguire was an employee of D&H Construction Co., a subcontractor with the Fulton County Department of Public Works. He was part of a small crew that was laying pipe along the road for water lines, Gordon said.

The initial emergency call was directed to the Forsyth County Fire Department, which was first to arrive on the scene. Aguire was dead when emergency personnel got there.

According to Gordon, the fire department contacted Alpharetta because the incident was determined to have occurred on the Fulton County side of McGinnis Ferry Road, which in several stretches serves as the county line.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, OSHA, also was summoned and “started their own process” of investigation, Gordon said.
