Letter to the editor
County should buy Lanier Golf Course

Forsyth County News
Since I haven’t seen any letters to the editor in the past few weeks in favor of purchasing Lanier Golf Course, I figured I’d give it a go.

The last letter to the editor from Mr. Elrod insists the money should be used for something else, because of the economy. If he knew anything about the original bond issue he would know the money is specified for this type of purpose.

I don’t play golf, but I do know that preserving some greenspace along Buford Dam Road would be a good move. There are only three ways across the river in the South part of the county, and this one is frequently traveled. Any increase in traffic created by a large development would be detrimental.

If I recall correctly, at one point in time the corps of engineers threatened to close traffic across the dam. Any large development that might add to commuter traffic should be avoided at all costs.

I heard some concerned citizens at the recent district meeting that wanted some other land purchased, but it appeared obvious that these concerned citizens had concerns that were more selfish in nature than to benefit the community at large. Sure, I have a concern since I live along Buford Dam Road, but that concern is merely in line with common sense, and matter of fact, too much traffic on a narrow thru-way is to be avoided if at all possible.

All that said, purchasing land that is already managed greenspace as a golf course that would not add to the county’s operating expense, should be a no-brainer. My only beef with it: there should be included in the deal more accommodation for non-golfers, such as a renovated pool, clubhouse (for various community events or even available for lease for private events), and tennis courts.
