The 2011 camping season officially begins in Forsyth County on Monday, when the recently renovated Shady Grove Campground opens its 110 campsites.

During the offseason, the county parks and recreation department made improvements to the 109-acre campground off Shadburn Ferry Road on the shore of Lake Lanier.

Visitors will notice a portion of the campground property near the campsites has been turned into a grassy play area and the shoreline has been restored.

Recreational vehicle sites have been expanded, and tent sites have had water and power hookups added.

The improvements totaled about $1 million, which was paid for through the voter-approved $100 million parks, recreation and green space bond.

Jerry Kinsey, director of parks and recreation, said the campground has "received wonderful updates and improvements that we anticipate will help make this an even more popular destination."

Shady Grove campers can also enjoy a beach and swim area, boat ramp, group campsites with picnic shelters and a playground, among other features.

The campground will remain open until Nov. 6.
