CUMMING — Lumpkin County’s deputy coroner has been suspended following her arrest over Labor Day weekend in Cumming on charges of impersonating a police officer, according to authorities.

Doug Rainwater, a spokesman for the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, said Sonya Abercrombie, 47, was arrested about 11 p.m. Saturday after she refused to show identification to a server at Austin’s Tavern.

“She and a friend were sitting inside the bar area at 10:50 p.m. and the waitress served them both alcoholic drinks,” Rainwater said. “And when the waitress asked for their IDs, Ms. Abercrombie kind of pointed toward a badge on her belt and said, ‘I’m a police officer, I don’t need to show you a [expletive] ID.’”

Right after that, the two women went to the restroom.

“The waitress then asked the management what to do, and the management called 911,” Rainwater said.

After deputies arrived, it was confirmed that Abercrombie had made the statement about being a police officer and was taken into custody.

Rainwater said Abercrombie, who has been suspended without pay from her position in Lumpkin, posted a bond of $5,610 on Sunday and was released.

Her friend was not arrested since she hadn’t made any statements similar to those of Abercrombie.

“The really ridiculous thing was that both women had IDs on them, so all [Abercrombie] had to do was show it to the waitress,” Rainwater said.
