GAINESVILLE — A Gainesville man has been charged with murder in the Friday afternoon death of his grandmother.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the reported homicide at Liberty Street in Hall County, in the New Holland neighborhood. Deputies responded around 2:30 p.m. after receiving reports of an assault. Gainesville Police Department spokesman Cpl. Kevin Holbrook said the residence, while proximate to the city, is in an unincorporated plot of the county and not in police jurisdiction.

The Sheriff’s Office arrested Ronnie Quqomeki Rucker, 32, and charged him in the death of Lula Bell Howard, 70.

Several officials were at the scene late Friday afternoon, including Hall County District Attorney Lee Darragh and Major John Latty, head of the enforcement bureau for the sheriff’s office which oversees criminal investigations.

Latty said that investigators confirmed that it was Rucker who made the call to dispatch, and disclosed he was the victim’s grandson.

The case is active and under investigation, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Deputy John Marshall said. No further details were immediately available.

Marshall would not confirm if investigators had identified a motive. The victim’s cause of death also was being held.

Rucker is a convicted felon, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections, and was most recently released to probation in December after serving time in prison on an aggravated battery conviction.

He has been booked into the Hall County Jail where he is being held awaiting first appearance in Hall County Magistrate Court. Bond can only be set by a Superior Court judge, based on the charge.
