Motorists who travel along Hwy. 20 between Cumming and Canton are encouraged to speak up about the road.

The Georgia Department of Transportation held two meetings in May to gather improvement suggestions for the corridor, but there’s still time to comment online before public input ends July 15.

“Gathering input during the design phase allows ideas from the community to become part of the overall project when built,” said Teri Pope, department spokeswoman.

As many as 32,000 cars travel between the two cities daily.

In 2007, there were three separate widening projects being discussed to solve congestion problems, but the department was asked to hold off and perform an environmental impact statement for the entire 24-mile stretch.

The process for improving the road will be timely, Pope said, with estimates for the best-case scenario putting the completion at 2022.

But the lengthy process also allows time to be methodical about the department’s approach, allowing for more public involvement and planning for the future.

Pope noted the Web survey is anonymous and interactive, allowing participants to provide input on the need and purpose of the project, alternatives and assistance in identifying local areas of consideration, such as cemeteries and historical landmarks.

This project marks the first time the department has used a MetroQuest survey, which relies on non-engineering questions to get useful information for engineers.

“We are seeking input in new ways, using new avenues like this Web-based survey to get input of people that live and work in the area,” Pope said.
