Car show Saturday in Cumming backs Relay For Life

CUMMING -- Old cars and new hope will be found Saturday in front of the Forsyth County Board of Education office, building on two important areas in a local woman’s life.

The Forsyth County Schools Food and Nutrition Services is holding its fifth annual car show to benefit Relay For Life. Proceeds from the outdoor antique showroom, being held at 1120 Dahlonega Hwy., will benefit the American Cancer Society.

Some 80 to 90 vehicles will be on display from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., with registration open from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Most of the cars will be antiques, though “some people bring their Mustangs,” said Lynn Gilder, area manager of the school system’s food and nutrition services.

She said she expects about 200 people to pass through the rows of cars throughout the day. In past years, the event has raised an average of $2,900, though she said she hopes for more with nice weather.

However, if the weather doesn’t cooperate, an alternate rain date is set for March 28.

Gilder lost her father to cancer, and her sister is battling a form of lung cancer. Another sister’s husband has also been diagnosed.

“Cancer touches everybody in some way or another,” she said.

So when she decided to organize a Relay For Life team — they fundraise for the American Cancer Society — she thought of a car show.

Both her red ’39 Ford Coupe and her husband’s ’69 Camaro can be seen Saturday.

Their cars are not judged, she said. For a $20 entry/donation fee, cars can be put in the running for Top 25, Best in Show and a Superintendent’s Choice awards. Many exhibitors will also receive door prizes contributed by local restaurants, car service shops and organizations.

About 30 food and nutrition services personnel have been planning the event for about six months, Gilder said.

The spectacle is free to attend. Money from concessions, raffles and auctions will be donated, too.

Attendees will also have the chance to buy 50/50 tickets for $1 each, where one person’s ticket will be chosen to receive half of the money raised from the tickets. The other half will be added to the donation pot.
