Runners are invited to help a young girl recently diagnosed with cancer.

On Sunday, a 5K run and a "powder puff" football game will be held to raise funds for Sydney Ridings, a sixth-grader at Liberty Middle School.

Organizer April Lowe, a friend of Ridings parents, Tammy and Dyron, said the child was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma a week before the school year started.

The disease is a rare form of bone cancer that typically targets children between the ages of 10 and 20.

"She has a tumor on her spine, which is inoperable," Lowe said. "She’s currently undergoing chemotherapy treatments.

"It’s just been tough on her and her family, so how could we not help?"

Cost is $25 for either event or $40 for both.

Those participating can register on site Sunday at Sawnee Mountain Park. Registration begins at 1 p.m.

There will also be vendors, door prizes and raffles throughout the day.

Lowe is expecting a good turnout.

"Over 200 have registered already," she said.
