GAINESVILLE -- A Gainesville Middle School teacher has been removed from the classroom and is under investigation for allegedly assaulting a student during school hours last week, school and police officials said Monday.

The assault took place April 11 during normal school hours, according to Gainesville Police Department spokesman Sgt. Kevin Holbrook. He said no charges have been filed against the male teacher, who has not been identified.

“The information regarding the teacher and student is not being released at this time as to not compromise the ongoing investigation,” Holbrook said.

The teacher was placed on administrative leave while the investigation is completed, Gainesville City School System spokeswoman Lynn Jones said.

Gainesville School Superintendent Wanda Creel said the district would prefer not to comment on the police investigation.

“Any and all relevant information has been provided to the Gainesville Police Department,” Creel said. “They are conducting their investigation.

Holbrook said police were notified of the incident between the teacher and student by the student’s parent and school officials.
