The 9th District Republican Party announced Friday that former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich will speak during its convention April 16 in Forsyth County.
The convention, which will be held at the Lanier Technical College Forsyth Conference Center, will be Gingrich's first stop in Georgia since national reports of his potential presidential candidacy.
Gingrich's visit, one of just three stops he is expected to make in Georgia, underscores the state's significance in presidential politics, said Doug Grammer, 9th District chairman.
"Georgia is an important stop for serious candidates on the national level," Grammer said in a statement.
"We were the first state to be called for McCain in 2008 and we want to be the first state called for whichever nominee we select to remove President Obama from office in 2012."
Attendees from throughout Forsyth and the district's 14 other counties are expected at the convention.
"If Speaker Gingrich were to make an announcement, there is no better place than the 9th to officially announce a candidacy for president," Grammer said.
Guests will be admitted for $10 in advance and $15 at the door.
