Dancer from Cumming joins Nashville Ballet

SOUTH FORSYTH — A local dancer spent part of her summer developing her ballet technique and performance skills in Nashville, Tenn., where the instructors liked her so much they asked her to stay.

Hannah Harvey, 19, who graduated from Lambert High School in May, attended the School of Nashville Ballet’s Summer Intensive Program before being hired as professional dancer with the company.

Harvey has studied at North Atlanta Dance Academy in Alpharetta since 2007, having performed the role of Sugar Plum Fairy in the academy’s annual production of “The Nutcracker.”

“She is one of the best and strongest dancers we’ve had in our 20-year history,” said Kitty Garrison, administrator and co-owner (with her husband) of the academy.

The Alpharetta school currently teaches about 500 students.

Harvey was among 224 dancers from across the country and four international students from Brazil, China and Columbia to be selected for the Nashville program.

She had the chance to train with the company’s internationally recognized teachers and be seen by Paul Vasterling, artistic director and CEO.

Nashville Ballet is the largest professional ballet company in Tennessee and brings dance instruction to students ages 2-70.

“This program is special because students not only receive quality ballet training but they get a real sense of what Nashville the city is like,” said Sharyn Mahoney, director of artistic operations for the group.

Students attended one of five sessions for ages 11 and older, ranging from one to five weeks.

“Summer Intensive gives dancers the freedom to concentrate on advancing their ballet training without a school schedule,” Mahoney said. “By taking a wide variety of classes from ballet and contemporary to acting and musical theater, students leave with the knowledge and skills to take their future performance opportunities to the next level.”

Harvey has also attended The Royal Ballet in London, according to Garrison, and was a member of Lambert’s National Honor Society and Beta Club.
