CUMMING — Halloween is still more than a week away, but there is an opportunity for costumes and candy this Saturday.

From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Cumming Fairgrounds on Castleberry Road, Forsyth County government will put on its annual Trunk or Treat safety event.

Though previously held in north Forsyth, Forsyth County Fire Division Chief Jason Shiver said the sixth annual event has been moved to make it more accessible in a centralized location and allow for future expansion.

“Every year it has continued to grow and become quite popular among families,” Shivers said.

Admission to the event is a family-sized bag of candy, which will be distributed back to attendees.

“[It] is simply a family-friendly, fall and Halloween safety event,” Shivers said. “All Forsyth County public safety agencies are involved and the focus is safety oriented. There will be opportunities for costume inspections, stranger danger discussions and Halloween safety.”

It is also a chance to come out and enjoy several fun and family-friendly activities such as face painting, beanbag tosses and games.

“Local businesses come each year and provide booths, or trunks, for each family to stop and learn from each organization,” Shivers said.

Held the weekend before Halloween, the event is meant to complement the occasion.

“The goal is not to compete with Halloween, that’s never been the intent,” he said. “The intent is a precursor … and to help families prepare for a safe Halloween. Halloween and trick-or-treating are very popular in Forsyth County.”
