CUMMING -- Mardi Gras might still be a few months away, but some Forsyth County residents celebrated early over the weekend for a good cause.

On Saturday, Forsyth Fights Cancer, a part of the American Cancer Society, held its Mardi Gras Bash at the Lanier Technical College Forsyth Conference Center to raise funds for cancer research.

The black tie event brought some New Orleans style to Forsyth County and featured costumes, authentic cuisine from Chef Kerns and music from Dixieland jazz band 8up with Dixie.

Comedian Marvin Lee, who has appeared in several movies and TV shows, also performed at the event.

Claire and Frank Simpson, both cancer survivors, were honored as Mardi Gras King and Queen.

To raise funds, a silent auction was held featuring items including vacations, hot air balloon, car and airplane rides, golf tee times and a jersey autographed by Georgia Bulldog football legend Herschel Walker.

Forsyth Fights Cancer has raised hundreds of thousands for cancer early detection, education, patient services and research.

Money raised at the event will go toward the American Cancer Society “as it works to save lives by helping people stay well and get well, finding cures and fighting back.”
