A 1.8-mile section of the Big Creek Greenway trail in south Forsyth has been temporarily closed for repairs.

An expected reopening date has not been identified, said Jodi Gardner, spokeswoman for Forsyth County.

The closure of the section between McFarland Parkway and Union Hill Road was announced this week.

"The section is closed to allow for repairs to be made to the boardwalk portion of the trail in that area," Gardner said.

"We appreciate residents avoiding the closed section of the trail until the repairs are completed."

The remainder of the trail, between Union Hill and Bethelview roads, will remain open.

The greenway opened in fall 2009.

According to Gardner, a number of decking joists beneath the boardwalk have broken, though an exact cause has not been determined.

The section of boardwalk will have to be removed and the joists replaced.

She said officials are in the process of evaluating the issue and determining if the county can make the repairs own its own.
