It’s been eight years since the vocals of Kathy Russell, Pat Groman and Cheryl Rogers came together on the Cumming Playhouse stage. But soon their lovely harmonies, along with accompaniment by Bob Russell, will return in “The Mood Swingers 2017.”
The show runs May 19-21, at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 3 p.m. Sunday.
The Mood Swingers was formed in 2005 as part of an old-time radio troupe, directed by Groman. Bob and Kathy Russell, who Playhouse audiences may also know as the producers of the popular “Georgia Senior Follies,” had just moved to Cumming from San Jose, California. Kathy was cast in the radio show and Bob, who has a master’s degree in arranging and conducting, was asked to serve as musical director.
“When Bob heard Pat Groman and Cheryl Rogers sing, he instinctively knew that he should pair these voices with mine,” Kathy Russell said. “He felt that our three voices together would create magical and unique harmonies. And having the three of us singing together inspired Bob to want to arrange music specifically for our vocal blend.”
Russell said she, Groman and Rogers all bring their own unique quality to the group. She noted that her deep alto lends richness to the sound, while Rogers’ soprano range brings a classical quality and Groman’s clear and precise voice bring a folk-like characteristic to the harmonies.
The ladies came up with the somewhat cheeky name for the group based on their shared maturity and accompanying hormonal shifts. Today, they are all grandmothers.
Russell said the upcoming show is “very family-friendly” and will offer a range of music including show tunes, love songs, novelty songs, comedy, and numbers from 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s.
“After our eight-year hiatus, we are very eager to perform again for Cumming Playhouse audiences,” she asaid.
Tickets to “The Mood Swingers 2017” are $20, or $18 for veterans, seniors 60 and over, students age 18 and under, and groups of 25 or more. They can be purchased at www.playhousecumming.com or by calling (770) 781-9178.
