Sage Clothing owner Shannon Kitchens knew from a young age she wanted to do something in the fashion industry.
“I always loved fashion and thought I might design clothes,” she said.
Though she certainly has an eye for fashion, Kitchens found her entrepreneurial drive pulled her to the retail end of the industry. In 1997, at age 23, Kitchens opened Sage Clothing, an upscale boutique in Dunwoody.
Prior to opening Sage, Kitchens attended AIU in Atlanta and spent a semester in Los Angeles, going on to earn a degree in fashion marketing and design.
While in L.A., Kitchens marveled at the numerous ladies boutiques, which at the time were few and far between in Atlanta.
After the success of her first shop, Kitchens opened a second Sage Clothing in Buckhead in 2001. A few years later, she moved the Dunwoody store to Midtown.
The boutiques continued to thrive, offering customers both trendy and classic clothing, accessories and all things ladies apparel.
“When my leases came up, I decided to consolidate into one brick and mortar store,” she said.
After marrying husband James in 2004, the couple went on to have two sons, Aiden and Asher.
Sage Clothing opened in Forsyth County in 2008 at what was then The Avenue of Forsyth outdoor shopping mall. She relocated the business to the Avalon in nearby Alpharetta, when it opened in fall 2014.
Kitchens said having just one store also gives her more time to enjoy her sons. Sage also offers an online store for customers who prefer to shop from home.
Sage Clothing appeals to the sophisticated customer, women who want the latest stylish clothing and accessories from brands they know and love.
“I used to travel to L.A. frequently to shop for the store. But now, of course, I can order online,” she said.
While her clothes appeal mainly to high school and college-age women, Kitchens said she has many mothers who are regulars.
“I am 41, and I can wear at least 80 percent of what we carry,” Kitchens said. “We get new arrivals in every week, so we always have new things for customers to see.”
Kitchens went on to say that Sage carries trendy, fashion-forward clothes, but also items that are quite functional. She also tries to carry items that are high quality, but reasonably priced.
“Except for some premium items, most of our items are under $100,” she said.
Whether you’re looking for the perfect pair of blue jeans, trendy T-shirt or a fashionable tote or hat, Sage Clothing is a great place to find a chic outfit.
