American Legion Post 307, headquartered in Cumming, is taking applications for 2020 American Legion Boys State, which will be held May 24-30 at Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville.

Founded in 1935, Boys State is a “leadership action program” through the American Legion where participants take part in a practical government course to learn the mechanism of local, state and federal government.

Per the Boys State’s website, participants will take part in “legislative sessions, court proceedings, law-enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, choruses and recreational programs.”

The program is open to rising seniors who have not previously attended and “only those who illustrate leadership, character, scholarship, loyalty and service in their schools and community should be considered.”

During Boys State, each group will elect two representatives to go to Boys Nation in Washington, D.C. “where the young leaders receive an education on the structure and function of federal government.”

Those interested in applying for the program should contact their high school’s counselor for application forms. Homeschooled students can contact David Mullis at chaplain23@comcast.net.

Interviews will be conducted by local Legion members in late March.
