2014 MASTERS: Bubba wears green again

Bubba Watson won his second green jacket in three years Sunday at Augusta National.

2014 Masters coverage is presented by SouthCrest Bank and SouthCrest Mortgage.

“When I got to the 10 tee box, I still believed I could win the tournament, no doubt about it. I still thought that Bubba…”

Jordan Spieth paused.

The 20-year-old was ready to say “I still thought that Bubba would come back to the pack, fly off the handle, hit the ball so far out-of-bounds that his caddie would have to search for it with garden shears.” In case you haven’t heard, Jordan Spieth is mature beyond his years, so he didn’t say that.

He thought it, though. We all did.

But Bubba never blew it, and for the second time in three years, a “guy named Bubba from a small town,” as he likes to say, won golf’s greatest prize.

For a man who has admittedly only purchased one sport coat in his life (a light pink number that he’s never worn), capturing his second green jacket from the world’s most exclusive golf club was overwhelming once again.

“It’s a dream to win, and winning any tournament is a big deal. Winning the green jacket is a little bigger deal,” Bubba said after shooting a 3-under par 69 Sunday, outlasting Jordan Spieth and Jonas Blixt by three strokes.

“So, yeah, I’m going to cry, because why me? Why Bubba Watson from Bagdad, Florida? Why is he winning?”

Well, Bubba, he’s winning because he can drive the ball so far that he can hit sand wedges into par 5’s – like he did on 13 Sunday – and because no else on the leaderboard broke 70 in the final round.

With his win, Bubba becomes the 17th two-time Masters winner, and the first since Arnold Palmer in 1960 to win two of his first six attempts. That’s rarified air – unless you ask him.

“No, I’m just lucky enough to have two green jackets. I’m just trying to keep my TOUR card every year and if people say that I’m a good player, that’s great. But I’m not trying to play golf for a living. I play golf because I love it.”

I’m sure, however, that another winner’s check for $1.62 million won’t hurt, even for “a guy named Bubba from a small town.”
