PREP ROUNDUP: Denmark girls basketball gets first win; Central wrestling crowds podiums on Saturday

The Denmark girls basketball team got its first win in program history on Saturday, beating Pinecrest 38-23 at home. North Forsyth opened its season that same day with a 45-35 win over Pace Academy, and Forsyth Central beat St. Pius X 92-66 on Saturday, with Ansley Carver pouring in 19 points with five three-pointers, Jillian Bretz scoring 18 and Elizabeth Pruitt scoring 16. The Bulldogs moved to 3-0 on the season with the win.

Three other county teams took losses on Saturday: Lambert fell 65-29 to a Brookwood team led by former Longhorns interim head coach Carolyn Whitney, West Forsyth lost 54-49 to Cherokee Bluff, and South Forsyth lost 43-26 to Centennial.

Pinecrest boys move to 3-0; Lambert wins second game

The Pinecrest boys basketball team continued its strong start under first-year head coach John Bauersfeld on Saturday with a 54-49 win at Denmark, putting the Paladins’ record at 3-0. Lambert won its second game of the season with a 71-64 win over Woodward Academy, and North Forsyth topped Osborne 56-43 to open its year with a victory. The Longhorns took two more victories on Monday and Tuesday: On Monday night, Lambert beat Peachtree Ridge in a wild 88-80 overtime contest, with junior forward Colin Granger pouring in 42 points, and on Tuesday, the Longhorns beat Shaw 63-51, with Mitch Ganote leading the way with 16 points.

The South Forsyth boys fell 72-60 to Centennial on Saturday and West Forsyth lost 51-44 to Lakeside-DeKalb.

Central has strong day at Collins Hill; North is runner-up at South

The Forsyth Central, Lambert and Denmark wrestling teams competed at the Defense Soap Invitational at Collins Hill on Saturday. Central took third out of 29 teams in the team standings with 162 points, Lambert finished ninth with 93, and Denmark took 26th with 10.

Central’s Avery Krippner took the county’s lone individual title, winning by 5-4 decision at 170 pounds. Five other county wrestlers finished second: Lambert’s Mason McClung at 106 pounds, Central’s Murat Aliyev at 113, Central’s Steven Messer at 120, Central’s Abraham Perez at 126, and Central’s Samuel Aldrich at 152.

Three other county teams competed on Saturday: West Forsyth finished fifth overall in the Blackbeard Duals at Allatoona, and North Forsyth and South Forsyth both went 4-1 at the War Eagle Duals, with the Raiders losing to Lumpkin County in the finals.
