The Sawnee Amateur Radio Association is calling all ham radio operators and the public to come out for its biggest event of the year.
Starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday, the group will host its annual field day event at the camping area of the Cumming Fairgrounds. During the event, ham radio operators will face off to see who can contact the most other operators across the country by noon on Sunday.
Jim Farmer, president of the group, said the event would be a chance to both work on skills and to meet up with other amateur radio operators.
“It’s primarily an emergency preparedness practice so we can practice setting up equipment in unusual situations away from where we normally operate,” he said. “It also gives us a chance to work together like we would during an emergency, but it’s also a lot of fun and a lot of fellowship.”
While the event has a big focus on experienced operators, they will also have a station for newcomers to check out the hobby.
“We will have a station set up that you can either watch operation or you can actually have a chance to make contact yourself under the auspices of an experienced operator,” Farmers said.
Farmer said he expects 30-40 operators from Forsyth County to attend, including some who will operate all evening.
