‘Mamma Mia!’ makes debut at School Street Playhouse on Sept. 5
‘Mamma Mia!’
“Mamma Mia!” will be at the School Street Playhouse from Sept. 5-29.

Dynamos to dancing queens and everyone in between are sure to enjoy the School Street Playhouse’s upcoming show. BK Productions will present the pop classic “Mamma Mia!” from Sept. 5-29 on the local stage.

With a cast of more than 20 of the area’s most talented actors, singers and dancers, “Mamma Mia!” is sure to delight audiences. This bubbly show features more than 20 hits from ABBA, the Swedish pop/dance group that was active from 1972-82 and became one of the most popular international groups of all time.

“Mamma Mia!” debuted in London in 1999 and opened on Broadway in 2001. As of late 2017, it was the ninth longest running Broadway shows of all time with some 5,773 performances there. In 2008, the show spawned a popular film adaption starring Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, and Pierce Brosnan.

This sunny and funny tale unfolds on a Greek island paradise as, on the eve of her wedding, a daughter begins a quest to discover the identity of her father. This quest brings her mother’s past back to the island quite literally when three of her former suitors, and potential fathers of her daughter, return to the paradise they’ve been away from for 20 years.

Producer Kathy Russell said “Mamma Mia!” is a show that she and her late husband, Bob (the “B” of BK Productions), who passed away in 2018, had wanted to bring to the local stage for many years.

“Bob and I always loved the music of ABBA,” she said. “It took years for the production rights to ‘Mamma Mia!’ to be released for use in community theaters. As soon as they became available, we jumped on it.”

Russell said the popular music of the show is one of the main reasons audiences will enjoy it — noting that it will be hard to not “sing along and tap your toes” — but there are plenty of other reasons to love the show too.

“Besides all being extremely talented, this cast has great camaraderie. We are so lucky to have all of these people in one show,” she said. “They come from such diverse backgrounds and have become such good friends, and their love for one another is so apparent on stage.

“Also, our director, Kyle Larsen, and our choreographer, Buddy Stotts, are the best in the area. I’m not exaggerating — every show they do is a notch above the rest. We are just so blessed to have them as colleagues and friends.”

Audiences will likely also enjoy the “Mamma Mia!” costumes, some of which harken back to ABBA’s heyday during the disco era, and set.

“This is a very big show, but we have always done big shows on the small Playhouse stage. It takes creativity and we have managed to do it every time,” Russell said. “This time we’ve incorporated an amazing two-story set that is spectacular. That alone is worth the price of admission, but of course the cast is supreme and everything about this show is great fun.”

Tickets to “Mamma Mia!” are $30 or $27.50 for seniors, veterans, students or groups of 25 or more. To order tickets or learn more about the show, go to www.schoolstreetplayhouse.com. Formerly known as the Cumming Playhouse, School Street Playhouse is located at 101 School Street in downtown Cumming.
