Authorities say that a man died early on Wednesday morning during a wreck on Canton Highway in west Forsyth.

In a press release, Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Cpl. Doug Rainwater said that the single-vehicle wreck occurred at about 5:05 a.m. near the intersection of Canton Highway and Post Road.

The release states that a commercial box truck, operated by Desmond Smith, 64, of DeKalb County, was traveling eastbound on Canton Highway when it veered off the roadway, crossed back over the road and came to a stop in a ditch on the westbound side of Canton Highway.

Smith was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead, according to the release.

Following the wreck, Rainwater said that Smith’s death appears to have been from a medical emergency, not from the wreck itself, but their investigation is ongoing.

This wreck is being investigated by the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Specialist Unit.
