With Forsyth County’s consistent growth has come seemingly ever-present road projects, but some are expected to be completed in 2019 and help motorists. Several widenings should help some of the county’s main traffic arteries handle more vehicles. A new connector on the south part of downtown Cumming might help with traffic around the Cumming Fairgrounds. Even a plethora of new sidewalks will be accessible for those on foot.

Brookwood Road widening

Approved by Forsyth County commissioners in August 2017 and started in October of that year, the $7.1 million project included widening the road to two lanes in each direction with a raised median, shoulders, curb and gutter and 5-foot sidewalks from Peachtree Parkway to McGinnis Ferry Road. Norcross-based CMES Inc., is the contractor for the project, which is expected to be completed mid-February.

Bethelview Road widening, Phase II

First announced in October 2015, the $37 million project is expected to improve the safety and vehicle capacity on Bethelview Road through widening the well-traveled traffic artery from two to four lanes, alignment modifications, the addition of a raised median and the reconfiguration and/or reconstruction of several existing intersections to provide adequate turn lanes along 5.1 miles from Castleberry Road to Canton Highway. Norcross-based CMES Inc., is the contractor for the project, which is expected to be completed by the end of June.

Sidewalks galore

Five different sidewalk projects around the county totaling $3.9 million are expected to be completed in the next two months.

By early February, 5-foot sidewalks on Trammel Road from Windermere to Canton Highway are expected to be completed by Tri-Scapes Inc.

By the end of March, 5-foot sidewalks on Nichols Road from Nichols Drive to Summerwind Way; Echols Road; Nuckolls Road from Canton Highway to Buford Dam Road; and Sanders Road from Canton Highway to Buford Dam Road are expected to be completed by contractors DAF Concrete and Solidscapes, LLC.

Extending Industrial Park Drive

The city of Cumming is in the engineering phase of a project that it hopes to have completed by the end of the year that will help motorists access the Cumming Fairgrounds parking lot from Veterans Memorial Boulevard. The city plans to extend Industrial Park Drive to connect with Castleberry Road through the south end of the Fairgrounds parking lot.
