A Forsyth County man has been cited in connection with a fire Wednesday that destroyed one barn and threatened two others near the Cherokee County line.

The man, whose name has not been released, was apparently burning garbage outside.

He was cited by the Forsyth County Fire Department for violating a county ordinance and the state burn ban.

“The fire he was burning got out of control and caused the other fires to spread,” said Forsyth County Fire Capt. Jason Shivers.

Shivers said outdoor burning isn’t allowed by the state until October and household garbage is not approved for burning.

No people or livestock were hurt in the blaze, which occurred Wednesday afternoon on Franklin Goldmine Road. The flames torched a barn and charred another.

Shivers said a pickup truck kept inside the barn was destroyed, as were 15 to 20 bales of hay.
