CUMMING – A boating accident on Lake Lanier claimed the life of a 34-year-old man Sunday evening, officials said.

Arie Elek, 34, of Rockville, Maryland, was involved in a single-boat incident about 7 p.m. on June 12, according to Mark McKinnon, public affairs officer for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

He was reportedly tubing behind a boat near Little Ridge Park when the incident occurred, McKinnon said.

Details about the incident, including a cause of death and the nature of the accident, have not been released and will be fleshed out in the coming weeks.

“We will do a very thorough investigation … to determine what happened,” McKinnon said. “That typically takes about six weeks or so.”

It was not immediately clear whether alcohol was involved. No charges have been filed, McKinnon said.

The body was recovered from the water, he said.

Though the exact number was not immediately clear, McKinnon said there were extended family members who live in Georgia on the boat at the time of the incident.
