A brush fire Wednesday afternoon damaged equipment at a Hwy. 20 business and disrupted traffic along the well-traveled corridor.

The Buford Highway-James Burgess Road crossing near Windermere was closed for about two hours after a fire broke out at a grading business.

Forsyth County Fire Capt. Jason Shivers said the blaze started about 1:15 p.m. at D&D Grading, 3265 Buford Highway.

The road was temporarily closed while firefighters worked to put out the flames.

“The fire was accidental,” Shivers said. “They were burning debris and it just got out of hand.”

D&D representatives could not be reached for comment.

There were no reports of injuries. Shivers said 40 to 45 tires behind the business caught fire, as well as a pickup truck and a semi tractor-trailer.

The fire was put out before it reached the building or any neighboring property, he said.
