CUMMING – When the Burger King in Cumming uses the chain’s tagline that it flame-grills their patties, they probably do not mean for it to apply to cars in the drive-thru.
A vehicle caught fire while waiting for an order from the fast food eatery at the corner of Atlanta Highway (Hwy. 9) and Buford Highway (Hwy. 20) about 6:40 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, causing no injuries but damaging the building, officials said.
Forsyth County Fire Division Chief Jason Shivers said the blaze was caused by a mechanical failure that spread to the vehicle’s fuel line.
“It just burst into flames,” said Gary Savage, owner and driver of the 1997 Dodge Ram that he joked was on the restaurant’s lunch menu.
Savage said he has been getting coffee at 6:30 a.m. at that location for three years.
“It’s a great Burger King,” he said. “Maria, the manager, she was great. She immediately closed the window and called 911, even though I was also calling 911.”
The fire and smoke that could be seen from the road was “significant because it was fuel-fed,” Shivers said.
The Burger King was evacuated.
Though the flames did not catch onto to the building, the eatery did suffer smoke and water damage due to the glass drive-thru window breaking, Shivers said.
The business is closed until repairs are made. Shivers said the incident is not under investigation because of the cause being known to be accidental.
