EAST FORSYTH — A long line of customers stood with their shopping carts at the ready Thursday awaiting the 9 a.m. opening of the new Aldi on Buford Highway (Hwy. 20).

Susan Jasko, manager of the discount grocery, said she and her team of about 10 employees were excited to come to Forsyth County.

“We’ve gotten a lot of good feedback from the community and we’re ready to open and start serving our customers here,” she said.

Thom Behtz, vice president for the chain’s Jefferson division, of which the local store is a part, welcomed shoppers. For those unfamiliar with the Aldi concept, he said it’s all about cost savings.

“We offer lines of products that are exclusive to Aldi … and we have much lower overhead costs than most grocery stores, so we’re able to pass all those savings on to our customers,” he said.

Other unique Aldi concepts are a 25-cent cart rental fee, having shoppers bag their own items and bring their own bags or buy bags, all of which lead to lower food costs.

The new Aldi, which is near Trammel Road east of Cumming, is open from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 10 a.m.-7 p.m. on Sundays.
