The public is invited to help Forsyth County area charities while saving money this weekend at a local department store.
The Lakeland Plaza Belk will hold its annual Fall Charity Sale, an in-store shopping event, from 6 to 10 a.m. Saturday.
In exchange for a $5 ticket, customers are entitled to discounts ranging from 20 to 70 percent on purchases, including special savings on rarely discounted brands.
Customers will also receive $5 off their first purchase of $5 or more.
Belk cardholders will receive double points for card purchases and Belk Elite cardholders will receive triple rewards points.
Participating charities have been selling tickets to the event since Oct. 29, but tickets can also be purchased Saturday at the store.
All donations will be split among the charities.
James Foskett, human resources manager at the local store, said about 30 local nonprofit organizations will benefit from the sale.
"We've got 28 working with us now," he said. "The groups are primarily from Forsyth County, but we have a few from down in the Alpharetta area."
Foskett said the nonprofits include schools, sports teams, civic clubs and veterans groups, among others.
There is no limit on ticket sales or the amount of money raised. Belk provides tickets and materials at no cost to the participating groups.
Foskett said the store has given out more than 5,800 tickets to the nonprofit groups so far.
The first 100 customers Saturday will receive a free Belk gift card.
In addition, customers can register to win one of three $1,000 Belk shopping sprees.
All participating nonprofits are also eligible to win one of three $1,000 donations.
Charlotte, N.C.-based Belk Inc. has more than 300 stores in 16 Southern states.
The company's previous charity sale, held May 1, raised more than $4.5 million for hundreds of participating nonprofit organizations.
