The Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce’s 22nd Annual Chamber Membership Golf Challenge is set for 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Windermere Golf Club, 5000 Davis Love Drive.

Cost is $150 per person or $550 for a team of four and includes lunch. To register, call (770) 887-6461 or go online at www.cummingforsythchamber.org.

For years, Pat Murphy has started fall by hitting the links with fellow members of the local business community.

Though he’s not the greatest golfer, Murphy said, “we’re not trying to win anything.”

“It’s just a matter of getting closer to people that you’re going to work on things with,” he said. “I love to play a round of golf and I like to do business. So it’s a good way to combine the two.”

He will be joined by nearly 100 others Tuesday for the 22nd Annual Chamber Membership Golf Challenge, which benefits the Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce.

Murphy isn’t the only member to attend several years in a row, said Kris Carroll, chamber spokeswoman.

“A lot of members plan their budgets to participate in it,” she said. “It’s something that the enthusiasm builds for year after year after year.

“Whenever you have an event that has been in existence for as long as this has, you have a lot of ongoing members come to expect it and look forward to it.”

The golf challenge is one of the chamber’s largest annual fundraisers. Proceeds go toward the organization’s various programs and events, all designed to help grow business in Forsyth County.

Carroll said people are staying involved, despite the current economy.

“Everything this year has been more of a challenge,” she said. “This event allows people to develop relationships and those relationships is what leads to business and growth in business.

“At the end of the day, people buy from people, not businesses.”

For Murphy, the tournament also serves as a thank you to the chamber.

“We participate to support the chamber and all the good work that they do,” he said. “The golf is ... a fun way for chamber members to meet each other and at the same time lend their support to the chamber.”
