Sawnee Artists Association will hold its annual Christmas in Central Park this weekend.
Now in its ninth year, the free event is set for 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday inside the Central Park Recreation Center.
Charlotte Gardner, president of the association, said the event has seen continued success over the years.
“It has grown a lot since we started,” she said. “Sometimes 2,500 to 3,000 people will come through.”
This weekend, the gathering will feature more than 80 vendors of art items such as jewelry, pottery, woodwork and glass.
“A lot of the vendors have been with us for years and it’s all homemade art,” Gardner said.
In addition, the Sawnee Artists Association will have a gallery area for members to display and sell their works, and a church will provide food concessions throughout the event.
There will also be a number of local groups providing entertainment.
“There will be a sheet with all the times of the different local performers,” Gardner said. “There’s everything from singers and bands to maybe dance classes or baton twirling.”
Families will also have a chance to get their photos taken with “Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus.”
“He’s such a neat Santa and his wife comes with him, and the children really look cute with them,” Gardner said.
She said the event is good for anyone looking for unique Christmas gifts, such as “art in a bag.”
“That’s a sort of a grab bag,” she said. “It’s a nice, hand-sewn bag and in it you’ll get a piece of original artwork.”
She said about 80, 8-by-10 canvases were sent to association members for them to paint. They’ll be placed in the bags.
Proceeds from Christmas in Central Park go to the association for a range of programs, such as providing art supplies to the local senior centers and homes for children.
